ROWING AT PICTON
CHAMPIONSHIPS REGATTA OPENING IN FINE WEATHER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PICTON, This Day. The New Zealand championships regatta opened on Picton Harbour in glorious weather. Record entries have been received for the fixture. The foreshore is thronged by a large crowd. A gusty westerly wind is whipping the water into a tricky jobble so there appears little chance that the championship events will be started before noon.
A large number of excursionists is expected to arrive from Wellington by the Rangatira, during the morning. The champion fours were postponed until this afternoon, when calmer water is hoped for. Maiden four: Picton 1, Union (Wanganui) 2, Star 3. Six others started. Auckland were scratched. Won by four lengths, 11 lengths between second and third.
Maiden Fours (open). —Wairau 1, Canterbury 2, Kawatiri 3. Nine others started. Won by four lengths each way.
