FEATHERSTON
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. ALL ACCOUNTS IN CREDIT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr J. W. Card, presided at the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council, held last night. Others present were councillors, J. S. Viles, R. F. Watson, C. R. Skippage. M .B. Tait, C. C. Kenward, H. W. Cundy and T. G. Hardy. Apologies for absence were received from B. Donald and W. Johnson.
Tne treasurer reported that receipts since last meeting amounted to £857 8s 2d. All the borough accounts were in credit as follows: —District Fund, £2BB 14s; Cemetery Account, £9 Os 9d; Domain Account, £34 18s sd; Mavor’s Relief Fund, £95 8s; Water Supply Loan, £1407 16s; Literary Institute, £7 4s 2d. Rates outstanding for the current year amounted to £lO3l 13s Id.
The Featherston County Council advised that Councillors Q. Donald and L. J. Thompson had'been appointed to co-operate with the council in connection with "Keep Fit Week.” A complaint from a resident of Nevan Street regarding long grass was left in the hands of Councillor Watson.
In response to a request by the Masterton A. and P. Association for Featherston retailers to close their premises at 11 a.m. on People’s Day of the Masterton Show, the council decided to advertise inviting business people to comply with the request. The Railways Department asked that a 3-4 inch water supply be connected to a section in the Borough. The Clerk, Mr H. Rolls, reported that the section had already been supplied with water. A letter was received from the engineer stating that the contractor laying the new 8-inch main had made good progress and that the new main should be ready for use in about two weeks’ time.
The council decided, after some discussion, to approve of the regulations, proposed by the Transport Department, with regard to the operation of motor cycles. The council decided to take no action in connection with a letter from the Waitara Borough Councjl regarding the issue of model borough by-laws. It was decided that the dog registration fees remain the same as last year, plus the new fee of Is for hydatid medicine.
Personal Items. After the monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U. held yesterday afternoon, Mrs Archie Clark, on behalf of the women of the Presbyterian congregation presented Alison Jeanette, . infant daughter of the Rev. R. S. and Mrs Keenan, with a silver serviette ring, Alison being the first baby to be born in the Manse. Mrs Keenan replied on behalf of her daughter. Mrs Archie Clarke was the tea hostess.
Miss Eva Card is visiting Lower Hutt for the croquet tournament and is the guest of Mrs Pickard.
Mr and Mrs Chas. Rea have returned from a short visit to Hastings where they were the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Stringer. Fire Brigade Meeting. At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Volunteer Fire Brigade, Superintendent Tidswell presided over a good muster of members. The financial statement was read and adopted. Accounts amounting to £3 13s Id were passed for payment. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Miss Bessie Donald (£5) and from 'a supporter (£1) for donations. 6 A vote of £3 3s was passed towards the expenses of the brigade’s delegate to the conference at Wanganui. It was decided that the annual picnic be held on February 19. Fireman Skipage offered a trophy for a coupling event if one were held at the picnic. It was decided that on account of no time for this event being available at the picnic, it be competed for at a later date.
Fireman C. R. Skipage tendered his resignation from the brigade after 29 years’ service. He stated that he has taken this step with much regret, feeling that as he is getting on in years the time has come when he should resign his position and make room for another young member. The meeting reluctantly accepted the resignation, sincere regret being expressed by all members present. Mr Skipage was unanimously elected a life honorary member of the brigade. Fireman Worsley applied for a twoyear bar. Superintendent Tidswell presented Fireman Pulford with a two years' service bar, completing 11 years' service.
Two members who had attended the Lower Hutt Fire Brigade's annual reunion reported to have been most hospitably entertained. PLUNKET SOCIETY. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held yesterday afternoon. There were present: Mesdames Algar Williams (in the chair), J. G. McKenzie. G. Yule. H. R. Bloxam, J. Willett, A. R. Robbins. J. A. Halpin. R. S. Keenan. C. Burgh. G. S. Sharp, R. Donald. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Q. Donald, R. W. Matthews. Archie Clark, E. M. Wakely, J. R. Matthews. F. M. Turner, D. C. Collins. E. M. Shepherd and A. S. Kilsby. Accounts amounting to £l4 5s 6d were passed for payment. It was decided not to hold a Fair as had been suggested, but to conduct a Children’s Queen Carnival instead.
A social afternoon for Plunket mothers is to be held in the Parish Hall on Friday, February 24, from 3 p.m. till 5 p.m. The nurse’s report for December and January stated: —The number on the books for the respective months of December and January are: December 811, January 812; babies under supervision, December 60, January 61; preschool phildren, 32 and 33; new cases. 3 and 1; analysis of feeding, natural, 3 and 1; visits to rooms, adults, 31 and 46; babies, 29 and 46; children, 11 and 5; visits to homes, 81 and 57; ’phone calls. 20 and I'7; miles in car, 446 and
437; miles per gallon, 35 and 36.4. Districts visited: Pirinoa, The Knoll. Dyerville, Lower Valley, Otaraia, Pukio. Western Lake. Cross Creek Road. South Featherston. Personal Items. ■ Miss Ina McFadzean, Wellington, is visiting Featherston. Mr W. Pottenger, Kahutara, left for the South by steamer last night. Show Successes. Mr A. J. Hawke, manager of the Featherston Co-op. Dairy Factory, was awarded first prize for export quality cheese at the Dannevirke Show. Mr L. G. Rasmussen, buttermaker, obtained two third prizes for butter at the same show.
