RAILWAY CROSSING SMASH.
FATHER AND SON INJURED
Last evening a serious accident occurred on a private road which crosses the railway line just above the old Tannery site on the Masterton-Carter-ton road. Mr H. B. Davenport, who was returning home in his motor car accompanied by his 4-year-old son, was struck by a goods train which left the Carterton railway station at G. p.m. The view of the railway line is quite clear at this crossing, but Mr Davenport was unaware of the near approach of the train. He was so close to crossing the line that it was impossible for him 'to swerve or pull up in time to avert a crash. He accelerated his car, but was caught by the train which was-laden with about 33 trucks of sheep and other goods. The car' was badly damaged and Mr Davenport and his son were thrown from the car l and had a miraculous escape from being killed. The child received a bad cut from his lip to the cheek bone which necessitated several stitches being inserted. His forehead was also grazed and he received sundry bruises. Mr Davenport was cut about the forehead and behind his head and his shoulder was badly hurt. Dr. H. M. Budd, of Carterton, was called to the scene of the accident and after treatment the patients were taken to the Masterton Hospital.
Personal Items. Mr and Mrs H. J. Brown, who had been on an extended motor holiday of the North Island, have returned to their home having had an enjoyable time.

The result was 33/19 in favour of the holders. Champion Rink Badges. A Carterton rink consisting of Messrs Harris, Underhill, Barber and G. Hart (s) went to Grey town last evening to play for the champion rink badges held by Messrs Vile, Curtis. McLeod and Higgison (s). The game ended in favour of the holders by 25/18. St. Mark's Church. Services on Sunday next will be held at Gladstone at 11 a.m. and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. High Pressure Water. The decision of the Carterton Borough Council to appoint an assistant borough inspector has been the means of tightening up the regulations and as a result of close scrutiny for leaking taps the pressure has considerably increased the water gauges in the town showing over 201bs. of extra pressure and registering at the present time over 701bs.
