The National Assembly by 88 votes to 22 rejected the Nationalist proposal that "Die Stem” should forthwith be recognised as South Africa's only national anthem. The Prime Minister. General Ilertzog, declared that his party would never allow the Afrikaansspeaking section of the people to inflict inequality- or unfairness on the English-speaking section in South Africa.

A Government amendment that time alone and not Government could enforce such a proposal was afterward carried.
