WORK AT WIGRAM
CONSTRUCTION OF TWO NEW HANGARS. OTHER EXTENSIONS BEING MADE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. February 8. Two new concrete hangars capable of holding many aeroplanes are included in a new building programme about to be started at Wigram, the Royal New Zealand Air Force training station. In the last few days three contracts have been let for buildings which will involve an expenditure of more than £40,000. Work now in hand over the entire station involves an expenditure of approximately £lOO,OOO. These are for two new hangars and for a second store building. Already this year tenders have been let for buildings at Wigram costing more than £54,000. The programme now in hand, includes, in addition to the new hangars and store room, the No. 1 store rooms, a dormitory extension costing £5377, cubicles and a lavatory building costing £1429, kitchen alterations costing £ 659, and a petrol tank costing £3lB. Temporary barracks for single man are also being built and should be finished very shortly. One of the most costly of the addition jobs is the construction of a high watertank of reinforced concrete.
“All that can be done to expedite the job at Wigram is being done,” said the Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works. “Our great drawback is shortage of tradesmen, such as plumbers and carpenters. Everything is being speeded up just now, and I can say that everything that can be done will be done to accelerate the work. I can say with certainty that those who indulge in cheap talk about Labour having no plan for the strengthening of our defences ought to have a look round such
a job as we are doing at Wigram. That shows that we have the matter in hand .in a businesslike way. None of these jobs was in progress when we took over. We had to initiate the entire scheme. Our system of aerodrome construction is equal to anything in the world. Any delay taking place in constructional work is due to either shortage of steel or tradesmen, causes over which we have no control.
