CRICKET
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the executive committee of the Wairarapa Cricket Association was held last night in the office of the secretary (Mr T. E. Handcock). There were present—Messrs J. Tier (in the chair,) A. A. McPherson, R. Lendrum, G. Peterson, G. V. Greer. An apology for absence was received from Mr P. G. Ramsay. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Nelson Cricket Association regretting that Wairarapa was unable to send a team to Nelson at Easter. It was decided that the secretary write accepting a match with the Mercantile League at Easter, and to write secretaries of clubs (senior) asking them to forward the names of players who would be available to go Wellington for this game. Names are to be in the hands of the secretary not later than February 25. It was decided tha-t Mr J. H. Kemnitz represent the Cricket Association at the Physical Fitness Campaign meeting, which was being held at the same time as the executive meeting.
It was decided on the motion of Mr Lendrum, seconded by Mr McPherson, that it be recorded on the minutes the Association’s appreciation of the secretary's action in getting the representative team away to Wanganui, under trying circumstances. At this stage Messrs Kemnitz and Green attended and reported on the result of the Keep Fit meeting. It was stated that the procession would take place at 1.30 p.m., and march to the Park, and after a short address by the Mayor, cricket matches would be played, the starting time to be 2 p.m. To this end the secretary was instructed to write the cricket clubs, informing them of this, and urging all members to attend the procession, especially in view of the fact that the Keep Fit Committee had recognised the Association’s activities as sports men. The Secretary was instructed to procure one large banner with wording: “Wairarapa Cricket Association. Play Cricket and enjoy Health.” A letter from Mr J. R. Sheffield was read, and it was decided on the motion of Mr Greer, seconded by Mr Peterson, that a deputation bo appointed consisting of Messrs J. Tier, P. G. Ramsay, and the Secretary, to wait on the Park Committee, and go into the question of preparing practice wickets.
Mr Kemnitz further reported that the Keep Fit Committee wished the Association to arrange a cricket match on Tuesday, February 21, from about 4 p.m. till 6.30 p.m. A discussion took place as to the form this should take, and it was finally decided to ask Mr B. Iveson to pick two teams of “Old Timers” to play the game- on the Park Mr Tier moved and Mr Lendrum seconded that a letter of thanks be written to Mr Bert Wilcox, groundsman at the College, for his prompt action in preparing a wicket at the College ground at such short notice for Mr Sheffield’s coaching. The Association thoroughly appreciated this. The motion was carried.
