“STAMP ZOOS”
NEW EDUCATIONAL WORK. Postage stamps will play a prominent part in the educational work in natural history at the Canterbury Museum this year. Many stamps of different countries, including New Zealand, show pictures of animals, birds or plants, and competitions for children who collect such stamps are to be conducted by the educational officer at the museum, Mr George Guy.
Such collections of stamps are sometimes described as “stamp zoos,” and many American museums make a feature of displaying them along with exhibits of the animals or birds they illustrate. The competitions to be arranged by Mr Guy will probably be in various sections, possibly one for the best group of animals, another for the best collection illustrating natural history exhibits in the museum, and one for the best group which tells some story in natural history. The competitions will be held in the first week of the second term.
It is hoped to arrange for displays of stamps along with the corresponding exhibits in the museum. In the third term there will be an exhibition of natural history objects, such as leaves, ferns, shells, collected by children.
