CARTERTON
LODGE MEETING. LOYAL HEART OF OAK. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge was held last night when Bro. A. R. Tankersley, N.G.. presided over a very representative gathering, including members of Loyal Masterton Lodge, the District Grand Master, Sister E. McFarlane, members of the Wellington District Management Committee, and P.G.M. Bro. A. C. Blair, a director of the New Zealand Branch. All the visitors were accorded a very warm welcome by the Noble Grand as well as lodge honours, for which the Grand Mistress returned her thanks.
A vote of condolence was passed to the District Secretary, Bro. E. W. Guise, and his parents in the death of tne former's brother.
Accounts as follows were passed: Sick pay, £l5 10s; other accounts, £l2 4s 9d.
The District Grand Mistress during the evening installed Bro. C. C. Deller into the office of Vice Grand in a very efficient manner. On behalf of the Loyal Wairarapa Past Grands’ Lodge officially she presented the Ritual Shield won in the recent ritual contest by Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge. She congratulated the lodge offices upon their success and expressed the hope that the shield might go round, thereby creating more spirited rivalry. The shield was handed to Bro. W. J. Wilkins, the officer presiding when it was won. He suitably thanked the Grand Mistress for her kindly remarks.
■ Sister McFarlane was invited to address the meeting as the chief officer of the district. She thanked the N.G. for giving her the opportunity to address those present, which she did at some length in a very able way. Touching on the Social Security Act and other questions pertaining to the Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows, she said the B.M.C. Conference which will be held during Easter would bring down legislation which would be of very vital importance to the Order. At the conclusion of her address she was heartily applauded.
Other speakers were Bros. A. C. Blair, K. Cropp, R. Baikie, R. Farrow and J. H. Langley.
A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the speakers.
It was resolved tljat the lodge be represented at the annual meeting of the Wellington District Hospital Association which is to be held in Wellington on Friday, March 3.
Supper was provided and the visitors later returned to Wellington.
AN OLD ODD FELLOW.
SEVENTY YEARS A MEMBER.
Among the members who attended the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge meeting last evening was Bro. John Fensham, who threw in his lot by clearance from. Rose of Valley Lodge, Lower Hutt, on March 20, 1878. Previous to joining the local lodge he had been a member of Rose of Valley Lodge for 9 years, thus making him a member of 70 years standing. Bro. Fensham is 88 years old and carries his age remarkably well. He has a wonderful memory for dates and the old pioneering days and can talk most interestingly of the early days of New Zealand.
COMING OF AGE PARTY.
MR ERIC MELLISH. A very enjoyable coming .of age party was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Thos. E. Mellish, Wyndham Street, Carterton, on Saturday night last when a large number of relatives and friends gathered to celebrate the twenty-first birthday of Mr Eric Mellish, a very popular resident of Carterton. The evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing, the dance music being provided by Mr T. E. Mellish. At a suitable interval Mr Eric Mellish was presented with a beautiful leather suitcase and a shaving companion. A sumptuous sit down supper was greatly enjoyed, the tables being decorated with sweet peas and Iceland poppies. A particularly fine birthday cake, the gift of Mr IVlellish’s sisters and brothers, was cut and served by the guest of the evening. His health was toasted in bumpers and congratulations were extended to him on reaching his majority. Mr Eric Mellish suitably replied. The gathering was brought to a close by the singing of "For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow" ami the National Anthem. Building Removed. The building that was erected in the Post and Telegraph grounds some time ago. and which at one time served as an office for the payment of unemployment money, was yesterday removed in sections by government carpenters. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs C. Teal left Carterton yesterday to spend'a holiday at the Lower Hutt and Wellington. Mr and Mrs P. Burgess, South Carterton. will leave for Lake Ferry on holiday this week. Obituary. 'The death occurred at the Masterton hospital today of Mr Thomas Henry Wilson, a well known resident of Carrington. at the age of 81 years. Mrs Wilson died some years ago. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning leaving his late residence. Carrington, at It) o’clock, for the Clareville ( cemetery.
Card Tournament. The weekly euchre tourney of the Carterton branch of the Labour Party was held in the Band Room on Saturday night. The prizewinners were:— Ladies: Mrs W. Ticehurst 1. Mrs H. Hodder 2. Men: Mr C. Ammundson 1. Mr G. Maybee 2.
