REPORTED ACTION BY SPANISH GOVERNMENT

Maintenance of National Integrity Sought CONFLICTING STORIES CURRENT SOME TALK OF UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. February 6. The special correspondent of the “Daily Mail” in Perpignan says that the Spanish Republican Government is making peace overtures to the Nationalists. The Republican Premier, Dr Negrin, is reported to have charged Senor Del Vayo, Republican Foreign Minister, with the mission of conveying the terms to the British and French Governments. The reported meetings between the British Charge d’Affaires, the French Ambassador and Senor Del Vayo are denied, but it is believed that Dr Negrin’s proposals embrace the immediate cessation of hostilities and the signing of a treaty maintaining the integrity of the Spanish State. The “Daily Mail” .adds that President Azana, before departing for France, is reported to have urged the Government to surrender unconditionally. Other reports say that General Miaja, defender of Madrid, is urging the Government not to transfer the entire defences of the Madrid zone : as he will carry on there while the Government sues for peace by mediation.
