BASEBALL

KEEN GAMES ON SATURDAY. WINS FOR BORTHWICK'S BEARS AND PIRATES. Two baseball games were decided on the hockey grounds, Masterton, on Saturday under favourable conditions. Borthwick’s Bears defeated Harcombe Motors by 28 to 19 and Pirates accounted for Territorials by 33 to 20. A good standard of play was in evidence in both matches. In the Borthwick’s Bears—Harcombe Motors match the most outstanding player was Jack Hemi, who played an excellent game and did much to keep the runs down. The Bears played very well at the beginning of the contest but faded out somewhat in the closing stages. Harcombe Motors were not quite able to make up the leeway, the lead obtained by their opponents in the first innings being too great. In the other match, the team work by Pirates was much better than hitherto and showed much more keenness than in previous contests. Their positional play was very good and the side held a substantial lead throughout the match.

Fagan Motors will play Reliance Tires on Thursday afternoon.
