CAMPAIGN IN BRITAIN
EXPANSION OF LOCAL SCHEMES. EXPENDITURE OF NEARLY £7,000,000. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, February 4. In anticipation of the World Congress on Recreation and Leisure, which is meeting in London next week and will be attended by delegates from 20 countries, the National Fitness Council, which was set up in 1937, states that schemes for increasing local facilities for games and exercise, costing nearly £7,000,000, have been submitted during the past year. Grants amounting to £1,319,187 have already been promised for swimming baths, community centres, clubs, camps, playing fields and gymnastic equipment. One county, chiefly of agricultural character, shows that the number of people enrolling in classes for systematic physical education has multiplied over 10 times in the past two years.
