GERMAN INTENTIONS
INCREASE IN SUBMARINE TONNAGE. EXERCISE OF TREATY RIGHTS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. February 2. It has been agreed that a communique will be issued tonight, both in London and Berlin, concerning Germany’s notification in December of her intention to avail herself of certain rights under the Anglo-German naval agreements.
The communique states that after friendly discussions in Berlin concerning certain questions the German Government has agreed to furnish the British Government with a written statement of its intentions.
According to that statement Germany will progressively increase her submarine tonnage up to parity with that of members of the British Commonwealth of Nations, beginning in 1939 and continuing till the treaty limit is reached. She will also arm two cruisers which are now being constructed in such a manner as to change them to A class cruisers. Ln so doing she exercises the right to which she is entitled by the treaty.
