✓ SULEIMAN OUTCLASSES FIELD
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Having his first race of the season Suleiman outclassed the rest of the Zealandia Handicap field at Auckland on Saturday.
Until a week ago, when he was returned for the final polishing by his trainer, A. Cook, at Te Awamutu, Suleiman had done all his work on his owner’s farm and he was produced in first class condition. He led almost throughout, and his performance must be given full marks. For Melbourne. L. J. Ellis has arranged to leave Bluff for Melbourne on February 6 and will ride Disdain in some of her engagements. The first race will be at Williamstown on February 11, but as Ellis will not have had time to fix up his licence he will not be able to have the mount on that date. His first ride on the filly will be in the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield on February 18. This is run over five furlongs and a-half, and will be worth £l2OO to the winner. Ellis will probably also ride Stretto while he is in Melbourne. Later in the month he will leave for Sydney to be on hand when Defaulter arrives. Mr A. Young, owner of Disdain, will also leave for Melbourne on February 6.
Siegfried Sold. The English stallion Siegfried, imported to New Zealand by Mr R. H. Holden, of Poukawa, was sold at Trentham last week to Mr Alec Chisholm, of Otautau. The price was 800 guineas. Mares from Mr Holden’s stud were also disposed of. Lilock, the dam of Wilson, and the 1400-guinea colt, sold at the yearling sales, brough 700 guineas, being bought by Mr C. Wheeler, of South Australia; while Princess Bell, a Chief Ruler mare, realised 450 guineas, the buyer being Mr W. J. Smith, of Sydney.
The Garter Blue mare, Blue Maid, offered on account of Mr J. S. McLeod, of Hastings, fetched 650 guineas, the buyer being Mr W. J. Smith. The Limond mare, Stage Fright, dam of Shy, changed Hands at 300 guineas. Of the horses in training, Drachma was bought by Mr P. Curtis, of Christchurch, for 110 guineas, while his fullsister, Counterlunch, realised 200 guineas, the buyer being Mr W. Hancock, of Dunedin.
High-priced Colt. Wilson, who won a £6OO two-year-old race at Caulfield recently is the Siegfried-Liloock colt which Mr J. Wren, of Melbourne, gave 1050 guineas for at the 1938 Trentham yearling sales. Bred at the Mana Stud, Hawke’s Bay, Wilson is closely related to the Melburne Cup winner, Wotan. His dam, Lilock, is by Limond from Lovelock, a sister to Menelaus and Left, the dam of Wotan, Gaine Carrington and Peter Jackson. Wilson is bred to stay. March Off’s Foal. It was recently stated in a northern journal that March Off’s filly foal by Solicitor General had died. This is incorrect, and Mr J. P. Herlihy says that not only is this foal alive and doing well, but is the best-looking of all March Off’s progeny at this age. March Off and Gold Boa have both been mated with Man’s Pal this season. Went Wrong. The Nigger Minstrel mare Patter went wrong on the eve of the Wellington meeting. She is not to be persevered with and will take up stud duties next season.
On Lease. Aggravate has been leased by Mr M. O’Brien to his trainer, J. C. Tomkinson, and Metal Bird, who has arrived back at Riccarton to undergo schooling, has been leased by Mr C. L. Kettle to Mr J. J. Anisy, of Greymouth. Metal Bird will continue to be trained by E. Kingan.
To Join W. E. Hancock’s Stable.
A rising two-year-old filly by Blatherskite from March Off will join W. E. Hancock’s stable shortly. . This halfsister to Gold Boa, Valmal’ch, and co. is reported to be particularly well grown and promising. A colt, also rising two years, by the same sire, from Commentor, may also join the same stable.
Promising Jumper. Dividend is training on most satisfactorily in view of his immediate racing, and he will have many supporters for his hurdle engagement at the Riccarton summer meeting. He has raced only twice over obstacles, being third at his first start over ordinary battens, while at his next start over hurdles he had to jump the brush. His winning effort was recorded at the last New Zealand Cup meeting. Youngsters. Trumpeter Sound (Night Raid —High Note). Ageratum (Myosotis —Velocium) and the Shambles —Quality colt, a brother to Vintage, were worked along over about two furlongs last week, and if all goes well the youngsters may be produced at the Easter meeting at Riccarton. These two-year-olds all hail from the stable of Mrs J. Campbell. Benevolent. Benevolent, who, in two starts, has recorded one third placing at Riccarton, was gelded after racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting. While he fell away considerably after the operation, he has done well again in the past week or two, and is fast building up. By Beau Pere from Dignified, this two-year-old was so big that he had to be eased in the early spring, and it was not until November that he was asked to race. He promises to do well for Dr M. G. Louisson and C. Emerson.
Omapo. The name of Omapo has been chosen for a two-year-old full brother to Haerepo (Nightmarch —Azalea). Omapo is Maori for Nightmarch. — Trained Off. The Pombal gelding Punarua, who dead-heated with Royal Star II in the spring at Trentham, has evidently trained off. He rain poor races over the holiday meetings, and after filling a place in the hightweight at Trentham last Thursday, he ran poor races on the later days. ,
Failed Again. The Hunting Song mare White Gold, who failed at/Auckland after showing much promise in the late spring, was unable to do much better at the Wellington meeting. She was prominent early in her races, but faded out under pressure over the business end. It is possible that the going was too firm for her.
