One of the worst storms for many years struck the United States. Driving snow and sleet in the North-West and torrential rains and tornadic winds' in the South caused extensive damage. At least eighteen people are dead. Chicago is virtually paralysed by the wildest blizzard in its history. Transportation is almost at a complete standstill.

Thirty-nine persons were injured in three elevated railway accidents due to the storm.
