REGENT THEATRE
“THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO.” The story of “The Count of Monte Cristo” might almost be said to be universally known, and all who have read the story of Alexandre Dumas with pleasure will find even greater pleasure in the story as it will be finally presented on the screen of the Regent Theatre tonight. The picture is a magnificent production and those playing in the title roles have caught the spirit of Dumas’S story in a way that makes the adventures of the young French sailor and his sweetheart live. The leading roles are taken by Robert Donat and Elissa Landi. The supporting features are interesting. ."PORTIA ON TRIAL.” “Portia on Trial,” the delightful screen play adapted from Faith Baldwin’s immortal novel of the same name, will come to the Regent Theatre tomorrow night. Republic Pictures made an astute move in casting Frieda Inescort in the title role, for that splendid stage and screen star has just the maturity and emotional depth to give the role the strength and understanding it requires. In the sensational climax of “Portia on Trial” the price demanded is—the love of her own son. who has never known her —as mother. How, with superb poise and finesse, she contrives to win both her case and “her boy” provides a fitting finale to this unforgettable screen masterpiece. The role of Portia is one which should take its place among the film classics, and place Miss Inescort high in the ranking of the stars. Her artistry js augmented by players of the calibre of Walter Abel, Neil Hamilton, Heather Angel, Ruth Donnelly and Barbara Pepper. One dramatic highlight in the picture which is outstanding for heart appeal is the scene in which Portia is torn between her desire to be at the bedside of her injured son and her sense of duty which demands that she go to a State penitentiary to plead for the life of a youth doomed to the electric chair.
