TRAGEDY AT SEA
ARAB TRIMMER COMMITS SUICIDE. DURING VOYAGE ACROSS PACIFIC. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 31. A touch of tragedy was given the voyage of the British steamer Beatus on her trip across the Pacific from Texas to Auckland when it was discovered that an Arab member of the crew had committed suicide. On the arrival of the Beatus at Auckland the master, Captain, Ellery, said that on the afternoon on January 15 it was found that Abdo Saleh Ali, an Arab trimmer, had hanged himself in the ’tween deck, Ali, who was aged 35, was last seen at 2.30 o’clock in the afternoon and the body was found an hour later. A short man, he had evidently made a pile of coal to enable him to reach an overhanging beam with a wire.
Though the trimmer's neck was apparently broken, the Captain administered respiration, but without success. Captain Ellery said that Ali was quiet and reserved and on friendlyterms with the other Arab firemen. He is survived by a widow and five children in Arabia. A burial at sea was held under Mohammedan rites.
An inquiry will be opened before the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine.
