PIRINOA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. ANNUAL PICNIC. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the annual picnic of the local branch of the Women’s Institute which was held at Whakatomotomo on Saturday. Visitors from various branches in the Wairarapa were present, and a most enjoyable day was spent. There were several competitions held during the afternoon. Some of the events were won as follows: —Single men’s race: C. Carter; boys’ race, M. Carter; stepping the chain, Mrs D. Jones; married women’s race, Mrs D. Grey; three-legged race (men), C. Carter and M. Te Whaiti. Refreshments were provided. Personals. Mrs J. R. Te Whaiti Is visiting relatives in Wanganui. Miss Fenwick, who has been staying with her aunt, Mrs Hiko McMaster, has returned to Napier. Miss Kia Riwai, who was visiting her mother, has returned to Christchurch.

Mrs Thomas, who has been visiting her relatives at Taumarunui, has returned home. Mr and Mrs J. H. Atkinson have returned from a visit to Te Kuiti.

Mr R. McDougall and the Misses S. and J. McDougall are visiting Napier. Mrs Cyril Hewitson, Martinborough, is the guest of Mrs Stan Thomas. Mrs Mclsaac is an inmate of a private hospital in Wellington.

Mr L. Roband, who has been in indifferent health for a lengthy period, has entered the Greytown Hospital. Mr and Mrs J. H. Tilson have taken up their residence at Te Kopi, Palliser Bay. Mr and Mrs Bell, Wellington, are visitors to the district.

Mrs A. Warren, has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mr V. Saunders, who has had a recurrence of the complaint which compelled him to return from Egypt during the Great War, will shortly leave for Rotorua for treatment. Mr Saunders has been ill for the past five months.

A quiet wedding was solemnised at Wellington recently when Miss Joan Owens, of Dry River, was married to Mr Gordon, third son of the late Mr J. O. Sutherland and Mrs Sutherland, Te Pare.

Mrs Maxwell, Paraparaumu, Is the guest of Mrs Sutherland, Whakatomotomo.

Miss Mona Te Whaiti, who has been visiting relatives, has returned to Featherston.

In the South Wairarapa Gun Club’s final shoot for the Tisdall Cup, the winner was lan Sutherland. Mr and Mrs D. S. Warren and family are visiting Cape Palliser. Mr and Mrs Harry Martin, Otaraia, are the guests of Mrs McCrae, Wairoa. Lake Outlet Closed, The outlet of the lake closed a few days ago. McDougall Tennis Cup. Several games for the McDougall Cup have been played. The results of the first round were: —B. Guthrie won by default from G. Hume; G. Munro (rec. 10) beat C. Hume (rec. 15), 61-53; S. Thomas (owe 5) beat G. Cardno (rec. 15), 61-52. Second round: M. Herangi (rec. 10) beat G. Munro (rec. 10). 61-54; S. Thomas (owe 5) beat R. Guthrie (rec. 10), 61-51. Motor Car Goes Over Bank. Three motorists from Wellington recently had a miraculous escape from serious injuries when their car went over the bank at Te Kopi cutting. One of the occupants dislocated a shoulder, while his comrades escaped with minor injuries. Damage Done by Shooters. Property owners in this district and in the Palliser Bay area are much concerned at the acts of wilful damage by shooters. Owners of property have in the past been only too pleased to let shooters on their properties at all times but in some cases this privilege has been abused. Recently one owner allowed a party to shoot on his property and it is alleged that they shot a lamb.
