CARTERTON

DRUIDS' LODGE. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. ("Times-Age" Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Totara Lodge of Druids was held last evening. There was a good attendance of members, presided over by the Arch Druid, Bro A. Kay.

Sick pay amounting to £2l 6s was passed for payment, 12 members being on the sick funds. A refund of £l2 was received from the National Provident Society in regard to maternity claims. For the year ended December 31. 1938, sick pay to the amount of £454 19s 2d was paid out to members. The Grand Lodge advised that Bro A. F. Stretton had been elected District President for No. 1 District: also that Bro H. Matson had been appointed Grand Lodge Book Examiner in place of the late Bro N. R. Armstrong. Bro Hector Bassett was appointed lodge auditor.

Personal Items. Mr and Mrs D. S. Knutson and family. South Carterton, are spending a holiday on the sea coast at Glenburn. Mr and Mrs C. Tinsley and daughter, of Garrison Street, Carterton, returned home at the weekend after having spent a delightful holiday at Warkworth, Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua and other places. Mrs J. P. Johnston, of Carterton, left yesterday morning for Gisborne, where she will spend holidays with Mr and Mrs Raymond Phillpotts. Mrs Albert Nicolson, for some years a resident of Carterton and Gladstone, is seriously ill in the Greytown Hospital. Mrs M. F. King and family, of Davy Street, Carterton, returned home last weekend after a pleasant holiday in Christchurch. Cricket. A cricket team from the Taratahi district played a match at the weekend at Lower Hutt against Todd Motors and were victorious. Taratahi made 188 for 6 wickets and Todd Motors were disposed of for 88 runs. Howes was top scorer for the winners and L. Berry the most successful bowler, taking 8 wickets for 21 runs. Taken Over by Railway Department. The old established motor carrying service of Hadley Bros, in Belvedere Road, Carterton, was formally taken over by the Railway Department as from yesterday and will in future be carried on by the railway road transport service. Dog Registration. Mr Tretheway, the dog registrar for the Wairarapa South County Council and the Carterton Borough Council, is making good progress with the registration of dogs for both local bodies. So far he reports that 300 dogs have been registered in the county and 113 in the borough. There are still many dogs to be registered and it is expected that over. 1000 will be registered in the county before he completes his work. There are also many more to be dealt with in the borough. It is hoped owners of dogs will register to save destruction, if dogs are valued by owners. Primary Schools Open Tomorrow. After the summer vacation all primary schools will re-assemble for lessons tomorrow. The majority of secondary schools will open next week. .Motor Accidents. A motor accident occurred near the Carterton Post Office last evening when a car coming out of Holloway Street collided with the P. and T. linesman’s van. The damage was not very considerable, the Post Office van suffering most. The matter was reported to the Carterton Police and measurements of the road’ and other evidence was taken from the linesman and the boy driving the van this morning. There was another accident in Pembroke Street yesterday, which fortunately was not attended with serious consequences. A motor car and a motor cycle collided. The rider of the motor cycle was thrown from his machine but was not hurt. '

PARCEL EVENING. TENDERED TO MRS L. NOLAN. There was a very large attendance of Parkdale residents and visitors at the Parkvale Hall last evening, the occasion being a parcel evening tendered to Mrs L. Nolan (nee Miss Edna Martin), who was recently married. The evening was occupied by dancing to music supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton and Mr Gordon Udy and a very pleasant time was spent. At an opportune interval Mr G. T. Bliss, on behalf of those present, in an appropriate speech, asked the guest of the evening to accept and open the many very useful presents. This Mrs Nolan did amid applause. Prior to the gifts being opened Mr Silas Rayner, chairman of the Parkvale Hall Committee, presented Mrs Nolan with a beautiful posie, and took the opportunity to thank her for the veryvalued assistance she had rendered the Parkvale Hall Committee with the many functions held on their behalf. Mr L. Nolan, on behalf of his wife, sincerely thanked everyone for their kindness. A tasty supper was provided by the ladies of the district and a very successful function terminated at about one o'clock.
