CROQUET

DOMINION TOURNAMENT. UNFAVOURABLE CONDITIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., January 30. Overcast, bleak weather with a cold south-easterly wind made conditions difficult for players in the Dominion croquet championships, which were continued in Palmerston North today. There was nevertheless some good playing. Finality in the first life was reached in the women’s championship, Mrs C. Watkins (Hastings) beating Mrs A. H. Morgan (Hamilton), 26-25. The match was notable mainly for Mrs Morgan’s brilliant early play. She made a complete round to penultimate, but in the later stages, while Mrs Watkins progressed hoop by hoop, she failed when the match appeared to be well in her favour. Though Mrs Watkins played indifferently, she held on and made the most of her opportunity when Mrs Morgan missed with a medium shot to the peg. Results are:—
