LEADING WITNESS COMMITS SUICIDE DETECTIVE’S PISTOL USED. PROSECUTION SET DIFFICULT TASK. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. NEW YORK, January 30. George Weinberg, who was expected to be a star witness at the second trial of James Hines, Tammany Hall “boss” who was recently indicted by Mr Thomas Dewey, New York District Attorney, on corruption charges, shot himself dead in the bathroom of his home today. He used the pistol belonging to the detective assigned by Mr Dewey to prevent just such an occurance, Weinberg found the gun on the pocket of the detective’s overcoat in the bedroom wardrobe. Mr Dewey has suspended the detective for negligence. He said he will use the transcript of Weinberg’s testimony in the previous trial, but did' not think it would be nearly as effective.
