OBITUARY

DR PERCY ROSS COOK. C.E.E. The death occurred this morning of Dr Percy Ross Cook. C.8.E.. of Masterton, at the age of 70 years. The late Dr Cook, who had been in fail-, ing health for some time, was held in [ the highest respect and was one of I the best known doctors in Masterton. | where he had practised for the past; thirty-three years. Of a particularly j kindly nature, he endeared himself to! his patients and friends and in a quiet | way was always ready to help those • in need. His passing will be deeply regretted by the community generally. The late Dr Cook was born in Wellington, the son of the late Mr Edmund Cook. He was educated at the Timaru High School and was a graduate of Otago University, where he secured the degrees of M.B. and Ch.B. Later he attended medical colleges in England. Before coming to Masterton he had practised at several places in the South Island. During the war Dr Cook, as a member of the New Zealand Medical Corps, was in charge of the hospital ship Maheno. on which he served for 31 years. He acted as Assistant Director of Medical Services while the Maheno was in port in New Zealand. In recognition of his services he was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1918. He was an hon surgeon at the Masterton Hospital. On account of his health, Dr Cook was compelled, some months ago. to relinquish professional duties and his death was not. unexpected. Dr Cook is survived by a widow, two sons, Dr Wyvern G. Cook, house surgeon at Wanganui Hospital, and Mr L. G. Cook, pathologist at Liverpool University, and one daughter, Mrs Leslie Nisbet, of Karori, Wellington. The funeral will-be a private one. A service will be held at the late residence, Lincoln Road, at 11 o’clock on Thursday, prior to the remains being conveyed to the Crematorium, Karori.

MR HAROLD MATTHEWS. The many friends of Mr Harold Matthews, of Lansdowne, will regret to hear of his death, which occurred in the Wanganui Hospital this morning. The late Mr Matthews, who was 44 years of age, had not been in the best of health for the past year or so and recently proceeded to Wanganui for treatment.

Mr Matthews was a member of the clerical staff of Messrs T. Borthwick and Sons Ltd, with whom he had been associated for about 20 years, having been transferred to Masterton from Christchurch in 1929. He saw service in France as an officer of the New Zealand Medical Corps during the war and was a member of the Wairarapa R.S.A. He was a member of Masterton Masonic Lodge No 19, and a former member of the Masterton Golf Club. Mr Matthews is survived by a widow and one son, Bruce, and one daughter. Miss Doreen Matthews, besides his mother, who resides in Christchurch, and two brothers, Messrs Reginald (Hastings) and . Arthur Matthews (Christchurch).

The funeral will take place in Masterton.
