BASEBALL

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. TWO GAMES IN CARTERTON. (“Times-Age” Special.) Quite a crowd of Carterton people watched two baseball., matches at the Showgrounds on Saturday. The games were the normal competition matches of.the Wairarapa Baseball Association and were played in Carterton to stimulate interest in the game.

The following were the results: —

Harcombe Motors beat Pirates.

The teams were: — Harcombe’s: L. Allen (captain), W. Wickens, N. Parsonson, D. Handy, A. Harp, R. Foster, W. Richards, R. Bell, R. Killington, R. Curry. Pirates: J. Claridge (captain), V. Thompson, K. Mills, C. Allen, L. Dalberg, J. Bevan, D. Pauling, H. Wellington, J. Pauling, G. Jones. This game was limited to five innings and Harcombe’s started by scoring 14 runs in their first batting effort. Pirate’s fielding was bad ■ and although they fought hard at the end such a big opening score was too much to overcome. Harcombe’s have a strong team well lead by two Americans, Handy and Allen. Handy is the best pitcher in the competition. The scores were: —Harcombe’s 14, 2, 3,5, 7, total 31; Pirates 1,0, 2,4, 0, total 6.

Borthwick’s Bears beat Reliance Tyres.

Considering that this was only the third match either team had played and that every player was new to the game, this season, play of a good standard was reached. It was really an exciting game and at the end of the seventh innings both teams had scored 17 runs. In the extra innings Borthwick’s scored 9 runs and Reliance only 3. Individually Bear’s played well but the team work of Reliance, ably captained by F. R. Bodie, nearly overcame the individual brilliance of their opponents. The teams were: —Bears: C. Curtin (captain). J. Allen, L. Seira, G. Macfarlane, J. Hemi, A. Nelson. W. Hodgetts, R. Harman, D. Alexander, L. Ford. The scores were: —Bears, 5,2, 7, 1. 1, 1,0, 9. total 26; Reliance 0,0, 3,1, 6, 5. 2,3, total 20. Fagan Motors Beat Territorials. At Masterton, Fagan’s met Territorials in a game which was interesting by virtue of the uncommon scoring. Territorials twice made 13 runs in one innings but failed in other efforts. Fagan’s were more consistent in scoring and in their fielding at the latter part of the game. Territorials fielded badly towards the end and allowed Fagan’s to score 30 runs in the last three innings.

The scores were: Fagan's 5, 3. 1. 6. 10. 9, 11, total 45; Territorials 13, 0, 13. 0, 3. 4,2, total 35.
