Mr D. Mitchell, of the Pahiatua Post Office staff, has been transferred to Nelson.

The death occurred on Thursday at Otakou of Mrs Olivia Ellison, wife of the late Mr David Ellison, states a Press Association message from Dun•din. She was a grand-daughter of Karetai, one of the principal chiefs of Otago when the European settlement .vas established, and was aged 58 years. A tangi was held on Friday and Saturday, and Mrs Ellison was interred today at Otakou Cemetery. There was a large gathering of Maori and pakcha mourners.

The death occurred at his home in Petone recently of Mr Alfred Henry Silverwood. He was born "in London nearly 77 years ago, and in 1889 came to New Zealand, landing in Wellington. He obtained employment as a blacksmith and boilermaker with the New Zealand Railways, and occupied various positions with that department till his retirement. When this occurred, he was employed as machinist and tool expert at the Petone railway workshops. Mr Silverwood was a keen member of the Petone Volunteer Fire Brigade, which he joined in 1897. Prior to his retirement from active partici- j pation in the affairs of the brigade in j 1911, he won many trophies in com-1 petition. He was a member of the; Ancient Order of Foresters and he ’ passed through the chairs of that or-1 der in 1904. He was also a member i of the Ulster Lodge of Freemasons. I
