“They’re Off.” A man has to be quick-witted on a racecourse to earn a living. In this connection (says “Pilot) I heard a good story told the other day by a battler. He thought a horse could win a race at a recent provincial meeting, but thought it was a comparatively short price, he was not sure whether it was being genuinely backed. However, he saw the horse’s trainer and another Randwick trainer in close conversation. He determined to trail the latter. “I saw him look over the various layers’ books,” said the narrator, “but he passed on without doing business. I was getting a bit anxious to find out what was doing before it was too late, and when he next stopped at a bookmaker I shouted ‘They’re off.’ That was enough for the trainer. ‘Fifteen to five me,” he yelled, fairly forcing his money into the bookmaker’s hand. They weren’t off, but I had learned all I wanted, and followed the lead. Better still, the horse won.”
Wairio Cup Winner. As was generally expected, Boswell had little diffculty in running out 10 furlongs in the Wairia Cup, and the success of the Balboa horse was one of the features of the day’s racing. On Saturday, Boswell ran his last race in hack company, and promises to be one of the stars in local cup races from now on. Boswell is an out-and-out stayer, but like most entires, he requires racing to bring him to his best. His career has been marked by consistency, as he has never been further back than fourth in any race he contested. As a two-year-old he only raced once, when he finished fourth in the Dominion Handicap at Wingatui behind Forecast, Lazybones, and Top Row. He was then trained by D. P. Wilson at Mosgiel. As a three-year-old he joined up with R. E. McLellan’s team, and that year he was only produced once, when he won. This year Boswell has raced on seven occasions, winning four (including a dead-heat) being twice second, and once third. The patient policy adopted with the Balboa stallion appears to have been a wise one. Boswell will make his next appearance at the Dunedin Cup meeting.
Pleasing Return. After an absence of almost two years from racing Faculties returned to the winning list in his first attempt at Wairio. When he had to be put aside because of injuries almost two years back. Faculties was regarded as one of the most promising young steeplechasers produced in the south for some time, and a big future was being predicted for him. The Panmure gelding is a dashing jumper, but his success on Saturday may not indicate that he is right back to his best as yet. He jumped as well as ever, but the field he defeated was of poor class, and the journey only over two miles. Faculties has, however, only to train on again to prove one of the best jumpers in these parts.
