DAINTY SUE A SOLID TYPE

(By

“The Cynic.”)

There is nothing amiss with that good Drake mare Dainty Sue. but, as her Palmerston North owner, Mr C. Boyle, was unable to secure a suitable rider for her in the Ashhurst Cup on Monday, she declined the engagement. Dainty Sue has developed into a very solid type and, as she seems to be able to handle any sort of going, the Stratford winner is a popular pick for a good handicap in the autumn. Trentham Prize-money. Mr H. D. Greenwood was the most successful of the 44 owners who participated in the prize-money at the Wellington Racing Club’s Summer Meeting through the agency of Defaulter. He won £B4O and the gold cup valued at £l5O. Mr W. Higgins, who was represented by Beaulivre and Sigurd, won £775, and Mr T. H. Coltman, who races Haughty Winner, was next with £770. Lady Montana secured £675 for Mr B. Burgess, the Clifford Estate won £535 through Counterblast, Wild and Wild Chase. Mr A. Southey, owner of Lady Ina, won £5OO.

Six trainers trained two winners. They were:—H. A. Telford (Trentham). L. G. Morris (Awapuni), C. C. McCarthy (Riccarton), M. Williams (Otawi), D. E. Cotton (Riccarton), and T. R. George (Trentham). L. J. Ellis, with four wins, was the most successful jockey. G. R. Tattersail and C. T. Wilson each rode three winners, and H. N. Wiggins, two.

Paper Money Mares. The outstanding merit displayed by Defaulter will enhance the value of Paper Money mares. It may not be generally recognised that Paper Money’s pedigree represents the St Simon on the Sunshine taproot, which proved so very successful with Positano and Limond.

Beau Vite. Beau Vite, the winner of the Hopeful Stakes, is a shapely and wellgrown colt that looks sure to train on to display improved form. He won striding away at the finish as extra distance will not trouble but really prove to be in his favour. Beau Vite cost 900gns as a yearling and shapes like a bargain at the price. He was got by Beau Pere from Dominant, by Martian from Lovelorn, the dam of Nones, Menelaus. Prince Paladin and Lege, the dam of Wotan.

A Common Complaint. Dropped Catch made a special trip to Wellington on Saturday to compete in the high-weight event on Monday’s card at Trentham, but met with injuries on the steamer, and it was not possible to get him to Trentham. There appears to have been several mishaps to horses during transport to and from meetings in recent months.

Early Promise Not Fulfilled. Improvident was tried over seven furlongs at Trentham on Monday, and ran quite a good race. He has not, however, yet fulfilled his early promise and he would not seem, at present at least, to be a favourable betting proposition.

Morning Flight. The winner of the Manawatu Gorge Hack Cup, Morning Flight, is a three-year-old roan by Laughing Prince from Moa Bird, and this was his second success. Evidently, he will be useful over a middle distance. Te Morehu was strongly fancied, but he could do no better than run fourth, after having every chance. New Zealand Bred. New Zealand-bred Martara (Martarma —Taraheke) won the Macpherson Cup, one and a-half miles, at Calcutta on December 17. He had 9.3 and. ridden by the Australian J. Simpson, scored easily in 2.34 1-5. Martara. who is trained by A. Higgins, was at good odds both with the bookmakers and on the totalisator. Good Performance. Always in front, Lucullus Lad had the Ashhurst Cup won by the time the challenges of Galteemore arid Winsome Lu became threatening, and it was the best performance this season of the consistent Lucullus gelding. He carries the same colours, those of Mr W. Devon, as Gay Chou, who ran second and first in his two starts at the meeting.

Good Fillies. At the Wellington spring meeting there was not much between Counterblast and Florence Mills, and they finished first and second in the City Handicap. Florence Mills bears an improved appearance, and should get amongst the winners of the near future.

I Very Solid. Lochie River proved himself a better galloper than he has been given credit for by comfortably defeating a useful hack field over a mile at Wairio. Earlier in his career the Weathervane gelding displayed plenty of ability but was not always reliable with it, but for H. Morton he has raced very solid-

ly from six furlongs to a mile. His Wairio success was most decisive and over the last furlong Fleet Street had no chance with him. During the winter Lochie River was given a course of schooling, and this appears to have agreed with him. Te Hero.

Te Hero is a good horse, but quite bad enough to be placed on the schooling list. At Trentham a start depended on how he behaved himself, and not on how the rest .of the field acted at the barrier. Such a state of affairs is most unfair to the majority of horses who stand up to the barrier until restiveness grows through being kept by such as Te Hero.
