SURPRISE AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.)' AUCKLAND. January 27. A surprise occurred in the semifinal of the combined doubles event at the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championships today, when the titleholders, Gunn and Miss Margaret Beverley, were beaten by Pountney and Miss N. Beverley, the score being 2-6, 6-2. 6-3. In the other semifinal. Smith and Miss Cooke beat Bedford and Miss Bishop, 8-6, 6-2.
The semifinals of the women’s singles resulted: —Miss Margaret Beverley (titleholder) beat Miss Bishop, 7-5, 6-1. Miss Plummer (Wellington) beat Miss N. Beverley, 6-3, 6-3. Men's doubles semi-final: Gunn and Bedford beat Lusk and Mitchell, 6-1. 6-2. 6-3.
