s Borough Improvements.

Good progress is being made with the re-laying of a new water main in Rhodes Street. The old 2-inch pipes have been taken up and are being replaced by 3-inch ones. This will provide a better pressure of water to the residents in this street. The old pipes that have been removed are very badly corroded. They will be taken to the borough yards and cleaned and mav be used to replace smaller ones in other streets later on. The work of kerbing and channelling Tyne Street footpath is now completed and the work of metalling the footpath preparatory to tarring will be taken in hand soon. Physical Welfare. A meeting of those interested in the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, 1938, was held in the Borough Council Chambers at Carterton on Wednesday. There were present his Worship the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner), R. Forbes. J. Steel. S. Fisher. Miss O. Wolters, E. McKenzie, W. G. Fossette, A. Reid, and the Secretary (Mr P. A. Cole). After discussion on the procedure it was decided to adjourn the meeting till February 1. and ask all interested associations and sports bodies to attend the meeting when the matter will be fully discussed and final arrangements made.
