TASMAN AIRWAY
PREPARATIONS FOR SERVICE LINK WITH EMPIRE CHAIN. DEVELOPMENTS IN PACIFIC. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, January 26. Mr Hudson Fysh said while the first of the new 24-ton flying-boats destined for the Tasman service were about to be launched at Rochester and an additional two were being launched within a month, this did not necessarily mean that it would be possible to fly them to Australia to begin a Tasman service immediately. The date of the opening of the service would depend on the provision of adequate bases, requisite radio services and navigational aids. Also an agreement was necessary as to which company should operate the new service. He added that the Pacific was increasingly important both from a civil and a military standpoint. England and America were fully alive to the possibilities of co-operation and according to reports from the United States further aviation activities would be undertaken shortly in many North and South Pacific islands.
“We are surveying possibilities of an extension of the London-Auckland route to Fiji and ultimately to San Francisco,” he said, "linking with the trans-Canadian service and completing British air lines across the world, affording Australia and New Zealand alternative routes to London.
