CARTERTON

PERSONAL ITEMS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mrs H. J. Smith and her son, who have been in Wellington since the Christmas holidays, returned to Carterton on Monday. Miss Adams, daughter of Mr and Mrs N. D. Adams, of Parkvale, Carterton, who has been on the teaching staff at the Carterton School, will leave on Monday next on transfer to the Totara School. Whangaroa Harbour, in the Bay of Islands. Mr Ewing, a teacher at the Carterton District High School, will leave Carterton next week to take a position in the Education Department, Wellington. Mr. Ewing, who has taken a very active interest in the school, will be greatly missed by pupils and the staff alike. He is a keen member of the Carterton cricket team and his place in the Carterton Eleven will be hard to fill. Cricket Team. The following will represent Carterton juniors in a match against Masterton, at Masterton, on Saturday: Berry, Ewing, Byers, Fitzgerald, Fisher, Steffert (2), Thompson, Harp, Kennedy, Ward, Powell. The bus will leave Carterton at 1 p.m. sharp. Hawke’s Bay Ram Fair.

A number of Romney rams were sent from Carterton yesterday afternoon for the Hastings Ram Fair, which is being held on Thursday. The. rams are from the Middle Run flock. Euchre Tourney and Dance. In the Bandroom, Carterton, on Saturday night, the Labour Party held their weekly euchre tourney, and dance. There was a very large attendance and the prizes for the euchre were won by Mrs Jensen with Mrs Townsend second. The men’s prize was won by Mr C. E. White with Mr Burney- second. The consolation prizes were won by Messrs Leriihan and W. Anderson. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr W. Lester (Greytown) and Miss Mack. The music was supplied by Te Tau’s Orchestra and supper was provided and presided over by the ladies’ committee. Bowling Championships. Further games in the club championships have been played as under: Champion Singles. —G. Hart beat Williams, 21/14; Sorensen beat Robertson, 22/18. Colts’ Singles.—Lynch beat Boyne, 23/11; Lynch beat Gaze, 27/10. Carterton Gas Works. A start has been made with concreting the engine room floor at the Carterton gasworks in readiness for the new exhauster that is to be installed in the near future. Baseball Matches. With a view to interesting prospective players in Carterton, the Wairarapa Baseball Association will play two competition matches at the Showgrounds on Saturday at 2 p.m. Masterton Pirates will play Harcombe Motors and at 3.15 p.m. Borthwick’s Bears will play Reliance Tyres. Admission to the ground will be free and it is hoped that many people will be present. Baseball is becoming a highly popular game and probably two clubs could be formed in Carterton.
