TURF NEWS & NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies BREEDING OF DESTINY

(By

"The Cynic.”)

Density resumed racing only last Thursday after having been off the scene for three months, owing to an accident while on a trip to Dunedin in October, and she had gone quite a fair race to the course proper in the hack sprint that day. She was a winner at her fifth and last start as a two-year-old last season, and in a single start at the Grand National Meeting in August she was beaten only by Lady Leigh, who has since won in open company, so her previous form was encouraging.

This winner is a black filly by Pink Coat from the Australian-bred Cistercian mare Denise, a granddaughter of the V.R.C. Oaks winner Symmetry. The family does not appear to have had a great deal of success in recent years, but one of its members, Black Duchess, was above average, with wins in such races as the V.R.C. Essendon Stakes and V.A.T.C. St. George Stakes (twice), as well as a second in the Caulfield Cup. It has been previously represented in the Dominion by Bay Dighton, a winner at Ellerslie and on other northern courses. Denise carries the colours of Mr D. Grant, who owns both sire and dam, and for whom she is trained by D. E. Cotton at Riccarton. WELLINGTON MEETING FINAL DAY’S RESULTS. EXCITING FINISH IN SUMMER HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, which concluded with the third day at Trentham yesterday, was one of the most successful in the history of the club. A very large holiday crowd was in attendance and the volume of betting that was a feature of the two previous days was well maintained, the increase for the meeting being £58,245. The total for the three days of £232,517 is getting on toward the highest the club has ever recorded in the boom years immediately after the war, when the meeting recorded £252,000. Compared with this last year’s total of £174, 272 appears insignificant.

Yesterday the crowd reached almost record proportions. The club was certainly lucky with the weather in view of the stormy summer experienced so far. The high wind on Thursday was the only drawback to the three days, Saturday being excellent, with yesterday even more balmy. The totalisator yesterday handled the large sum of £93,295, which was an increase of £10,291 on the Anniversary Day last January. There is no possible doubt about the popularity of racing at Trentham, which has gone on in recent years from success to success.
