NEW RECORDS

SUCCESS AT MASTERTON SPORTS MEETING SEVERAL FINE PERFORMANCES FITCH. BOOT & PULLAR DELIGHT THE CROWD. The lowering of two track records, in each case by 2-ssec, was a feature of the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club’s meeting, held on the Park Oval yesterday before an attendance of about 1700 spectators. New track records were set for the 440 yards by the American Olympic representative, A. L. Fitch, and for the 600 yards by Pat Boot. W. A. C. Pullar. gave a sterling performance in the I mile event, in which be encountered a strong challenge from R. Wyeth. Paced by a cyclist for the greater part of the distance, A. L. Fitch, the American Olympic representative and coach, succeeded in lowering the track record for 440 yards by 2-ssec. Fitch set a particularly smart pace for the first 220 yards but thereafter, probably on account of lack of recent running. he slowed down somewhat. All the same, he breasted the tape in 49 2-ssecs, 2-5 better than the record set by G. L. Parker, of the United States, many years ago ('and Johnston. South Africa. 1922). Pat Boot also succeeded in lowering the 600 yards track record of lmin 13 2-ssec held by R. Johnston. South Africa, by 2-ssec, his time being lmin 13 sec. Boot, who has a splendid stride, maintained an even pace throughout, and his fine performance impressed the onlookers. He was paced by three local runners.

The mile flat handicap for the Hall Cup provided one of the most thrilling finishes of the day. Pullar from scratch ran a well-judged race throughout and overtook the field in the last lap. On assuming the lead, howere, R. Wyeth, put in a determined challenge and looked as if he was going to head the champion to the tape. Pullar set his teeth to his task and had enough in hand to maintain his lead, though he appeared to be fully extended, to win by about a yard. Keen contests were also evident in the cycling events, in which there were two minor mishaps, as the result of which three children were slightly injured, and had to receive first-aid treatment for abrasions. In one case the mishap was caused through a tyre coming off a cycle. 1 Added interest was given to the meeting by a strong contingent of outside competition, including many from Wellington.

The patron of the club, Mr W. A. Todd, presented the trophies to the runners and congratulated them on their performance. Mr J. Robertson, M.P., expressed thanks on behalf of the club to the visitors for their attendance, and to the public for its generous patronage. After referring to the high value of amateur athletics as a healthful sport he complimented Fitch, Boot and Pullar on their fine performances and congratulated the club on the efficient way in which it had conducted the meeting.

The gate and stand takings totalled £72, which was considered most satisfactory. Results are as follow:— 100yds flat handicap: First heat, E. Martin (7yds) 1, H. R. England (9yds) 2, M.
