NORTH ISLAND TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS KEEN PLAY YESTERDAY. HAWKSWORTH BEATS M. FERKINS. The North Island tennis championships are drawing to a close at the Masterton Club courts as the result of splendid progress throughout yesterday. Beautiful weather again prevailed and tennis of a high standard was witnessed. The tourney should be concluded today. Once he found touch and brought his powerful service into play, G. A. Pearce, of Wellington, experienced no great difficulty in defeating J. B. McPherson, of Masterton, and a former Southland and Taranaki representative. Pearce won the first set 7/5, but he made no race of it in the second. Pearce later accounted for E. Dyer. Carterton. in two sets and reached the semi-finals. It was left to P. Hawksworth, of Masterton. to again provide the highlights of Ihe day. Matched against M. Ferkins. of Wellington, Hawksworth scored a remarkably fine win. He found the unorthodox Ferkins with his heavily sliced and spin shots most difficult in the first set, which lie lost 4/6 after being down 0/4. Ferkins retrieved everything and anything and he endeavoured to break up Hawksworth s speed by cut. shots, cleverly angled. The Wellington player ran into a 3/1 lead, but. Hawksworth slowly but surely made up the leeway, driving strongly and accurately deep down both wings. At ,3-all, he had Ferkins starting to scratch and the Wairarapa player ran out 6/3.
There was only one player in it in the final set and that was Hawksworth and he clinched the match 6/2. It was a fine win as Ferkins with his peculiar style and relentless retrieving is one of the hardest opponents in the province to beat.
Mrs Cotterill and Miss M. Glenny won the final of the ladies' doubles, defeating Misses J. Betts and J. Forrester in straight sets. It was fairly bright tennis, although the winners were too strong in all departments. Probably the best doubles match of the day was the three set contest between Bold and Willis, winners al Martinborough. and Lowry and Hodder. The match provided tennis of a high standard, every poinUbeing sternly contested. With honours easy, the third set was productive of spariding tennis, all four players volleying and driving beautifully. Bold and Willis had just enough in hand to take the set 7/5. Hawksworth and Pearce, holders of the title, were too experienced and strong for Hamilton and Andrew in an intertaining doubles match. Painter and K. Dyer accounted for Bold and Willis in a semi-final of the men's doubles. It was a bright exhibition, with Dyer's severe overhead work and Painter's cleverly executed ground shots proving the deciding factor. They won in two sets,- both' of which were keenly contested.
Results after going to press yesterday were as follow:— S. Painter, the youthful Wellington Wilding Shield representative, revealed just what a fine player he is when he met J. N. Lowry, Hawke’s Bay in the men’s championship singles. Lowry played steady tennis, but Painter always had a little too much in hand and varying his play beautifully, he ran out a winner in straight sets.
Miss A Longton, of Wellington, won the final of the girls’ championship singles with a good win over Miss M. Burrell, of Christchurch. Both girls Played good tennis.

TODAY’S MATCHES WIND RATHER TROUBLESOME. A fairly strong cross-court wind interfered somewhat with play at the North Island tennis championships, which are being continued at the Masterton Club courts today. Hawksworth played faultless tennis at top speed to defeat G. A. Pearce, Wellington, in straight sets in the semifinal of the men’s singles. It was Hawksworth’s first win over Pearce in competition tennis. An indication of the superiority of the Masterton player appeared in the fact that Pearce only scored 11 points in the first set and 10 in the second. For once, Pearce’s drag and sliced shots were no counter for Hawksworth’s speed and length. Results up to the time of going to press were as follow:— CHAMPIONSHIPS MEN’S SINGLES. Fourth Round. R.
