OBITUARY
MR EDGAR LOWDER HOLMWOOD. The death occurred at Whangarei Hospital, North Auckland, yesterday, of Mr Edgar Lowder Holmwood, who was at one time a well-known resident of Masterton and district, where he had resided for about fifty years. The late Mr Holmwood had been in indifferent health for some time past. Mr Holmwood was born in 1869 at Moffat, Scotland, the second son of the late Captain Holmwood, master of the sailing ship Hyderabad, which was wrecked on the beach at Otaki. His parents reach'ed New Zealand in 1880, and Mr Holmwood, as a child, together with his sister and brothers, attended the Masterton- School under the headmastership of the late Mr W. T. Grundy. Subsequently, Mr Holmwood took up farming on his father’s property at “Bushcroft,” near Masterton. Later he joined the firm of James Mackintosh, stock agents, and for several years was manager of the Masterton branch of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co, Ltd. Mr Holmwood then went into business on his own account as a land and station agent and also had several farm properties. About 12 years ago Mr Holmwood left Masterton for Takaka where he had a farm, and later took up similar pursuits at Waiuku, North Auckland.
In his younger days Mr Holmwood took a keen interest in sport, in Rugby especially, and at one time he was a prominent player, being recognised as a good half-back. He played for theMasterton and Red Star clubs and was president ■of the Old Boys Football Club for a period. He took a great deal of interest in the activities of the W.ajrarapa High School and for some years was a member of the High School
Board. The late Mr Holmwood is survived by a widow, one son and one daughter, besides a sister, Mrs A. C. Stewart (Whangarei) and three brothers, Messrs Charles and Bernard (Masterton) and Alan Holmwood (Hawke’s Bay).
