PIRINOA

PERSONAL ITEMS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs W. Hume, who recently returned from England, is visiting friends at Featherston. Mr and Mrs Rangi Ropiha, Porangahau, were the guests of Mr and Mrs F. Brough, Martinborough, for the weekend. Mr and Mrs R. Piripi have relumed from a visit to Lower Hutt. Mr and Mrs A. Linton, Tuhitarata, are spending a short holiday at the Waikanae beach. Miss K. Riwai, Christchurch, is visiting relatives in this district. Mr D. Bell is on a short visit to the South Island. Mr P. Scanlon. Taihape. is on a short visit to this district.

On Wednesday evening the members of the South Wairarapa Gun Club and friends held a social evening in honour of a member of the club, Mr Gordon Sutherland, who is to be married shortly. Mr P. S. Macdonald, in a neat speech, presented the guest of the evening with a travelling rug, and in doing so expressed the wish of members of the club and friends that Mr Sutherland should experience every happiness and prosperity in the future. Mr Sutherland suitably responded. Messrs A. Manihera, C. Carter and M. Te Whaiti, who have been in the Taihape district for some months, have returned home.

Mr and Mrs Riwai, Hawera, were the guests of Mr and Mrs J. Riwai, for the weekend.

Pastures Suffer. As a result of the high winds pastures have suffered considerably. The supply of milk to the local factory has dropped considerably. Bridge to be Dismantled. Work will shortly commence in dismantling the small wooden bridge on the main highway from Tuhitarata to Pirinoa. A concrete bridge will be built in place of the one dismantled. Local Racehorse Supported. A large number of sports from here attended the races at Trentham. Judging by the place dividend paid by a local-owned horse and trained elsewhere, it would appear local sports to a man invested on the chance of this local candidate. It was unfortunate the local candidate did not get the best of the start or otherwise there would have been great rejoicing in the local camp. Visit of Maoris. It is expected that a Hundred visiting Maoris from the Gisborne district will arrive at the local pa at Kohunui on February 1. Elaborate preparations are being made for their reception. Maoris from different parts of the Wairarapa will also be present. It is understood that problems affecting the native people will be discussed at the gathering.
