DELIGHTFUL TENNIS
PLAY AT NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS SPLENDID MEN’S SINGLES MATCH. HAWKSWORTH BEATS DYER. * P. Hawksworth, triple New Zealand badminton champion, and K. W. Dyer, of Wellington, provided the highlights at the North Island tennis championships on Saturday. They fought out one of the finest singles matches seen at the Masterton Club courts for years past. Hawksworth’s speed and accuracy finally carried the day. It was an exhibition of delightful tennis played under excellent conditions and on splendid courts. Under the efficient direction of the secretary, Mi’ H. M. Boddington, and officials of the association, good progress was made and the tourney is well advanced. Given continued fine weather, it should be concluded without difficulty tomorrow.
M. L. Lampe (Wanganui) veteran of nearly 40 years of tournaments, went under to J. E. Hamilton, a 16 yearsold boy highly regarded in Wellington. It was the old story of youth and speed triumphing over age and experience. Lampe had the boy scratching in the first set, which Hamilton eventually won 10/8 but he failed to stay the distance in the second and went under 2/6.
’On the centre court, Hawksworth and Dyer gave the large gallery a feast of grand tennis. Hawksworth curbed his usual hurricane game and, with excellent placements and varied speed, called the tune practically throughout. Dyer, however, was prepared to dance to the music and the first set went to 8/6 before Hawksworth won out. It looked like Hawksworth scoring in straight sets at one stage, but the Wairarapa champion fell into errors and Dyer, stroking beautifully and retrieving with terrier-like persistency, secured the upper hand and took the set 6/4. Fortunes fluctuated in a tense final set. Both players maintained an excellent length, with Hawksworth still making Dyer do the running. At the crucial stage Hawksworth touched peak form and he swept through the last two games at high speed to clinch the match 6/4. Sparkling play was witnessed in several of the men’s doubles matches. Andrew and Hamilton, two boys, secured a fine win over Lampe and Clark. Hawksworth and Pearce, holders of the title, were not endangered in their matches, while Ferkins and Ferkins and Lowry and Hodder also played finely.
The ladies’ singles are well advaricedx with Misses Z. Castle (Wellington), M. Glenny (Hastings) and L. Sturrock (Wellington) all still well in the picture. The issue in the ladies’ doubles and the combined doubles is wide open, several pairs standing good chances of success.
The star attraction this morning was a singles match between M. Ferkins and J. Hamilton, both of Wellington. It was a long drawn out contest in which the tennis was good without being remarkable. Both players maintained fine lengths, with Ferkins the steadier and the fitter player. Hamilton held a 5-3 lead in the second set but he frequently over- 1 hit when attempting to force the pace. Ferkins won in two sets.
An interested spectator on Saturday and this morning was Mr A. L. Fitch, the American athletic coach, who incidentally commented on the practice of players drinking water between games. He suggested that a lemon might be much better. Fine play was seen in a ladies’ championship doubles match in which Misses J. Betts and J. Forrester beat Misses Z. Castle and L. Sturrock, of Wellington. The Wellington pair were favourites for the title. Miss Betts was in capital form and was the outstanding player of the quartette. - H. Burns had an interesting duel with J. N. Lowry, a prominent Hawke’s Bay player. Burns took the first set and the second was keenly contested before Lowry won. Lowry’s steadiness and varied equipment of ground strokes enabled him to take the third set, 6-2.
