ATHLETIC SPORTS

MEETING ON PARK OVAL TODAY APPEARANCE OF V. P. BOOT. SIGNS OF KEEN PUBLIC INTEREST. The Masterton Amateur Athletic Club’s Anniversary Day Sports are being held on the Park Oval this afternoon in delightful weather, before a large attendance of spectators. More than usual interest attaches to the meeting at which V. P. Boot, Canterbury, New Zealand and British Empire Games half-mile champion and record holder, is attempting to break the 600 yard track record of 73 2-ssecs. This is his last appearance in New Zealand before proceeding to Australia tomorrow to take part in the New South Wales track and field championship meeting, and at another meeting in the same State.

Al Fitch, the American coach and 1936 Olympic Games representative is giving an exhibition run, and W. A. C. Pullar, New Zealand Empire Games representative is taking part in the mile handicap. Both these performers promise to give a good account of themselves. There is also a contingent of runners from Wellington, including T. McCashin, C. Robinson, J. Eastwood, J. Ford and F. Taylor. Among those attending the sports are Mr Ben Sutherland, of Wellington, and Mr J. Robertson, M.P. Results to the time of going to press are: —
