LAMB FOR CANADA

EXPERIMENTAL SHIPMENTS. Further experimental shipments of New Zealand lambs for the Eastern Canadian market are being made this season by the New Zealand Meat Producers Board, and the first consignment was recently despatched by the steamer “Kaipara.” It will be distributed from two points, 1,000 lambs going to Toronto, and the remainder to Montreal. The New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Toronto will handle the shipment in accordance with experience gained last season, when the Board's London manager visited Canada in connection with two experimental shipments which were made at the time.

The entry of New Zealand lamb in Canada has been greatly facilitated by a trade agreement negotiated with the Canadian Government by the Hon W. Nash (Minister of Finance) under which the duty was reduced by 3 cents per lb to half a cent per lb. The New Zealand Meat Producers Board's London manager found that there is a limited market for New Zealand lamb in Canada for a few months, approximately February till May. This season's opening shipment will enable a selling campaign to be inaugurated, and two further shipments will probably follow in March and April, after which supplies will be available from local producers.
