MAIL TRAIN DELAY
DUE TO DRAW-BARS BREAKING. The delay to the north bound mail train today, reported on page 4. was due to two draw-bars breaking. The train, which arrived in Masterton about an hour and a quarter late, consisted of eleven carriages and a guard’s' van. The train was heavily loaded and was drawn, by two engines, when it left Wellington. The first mishap occurred when the train was climbing the Mangaroa Hill. When nearing the top of the hill the draw-bar of the ninth carriage from the engines snapped. Fortunately the breakage occurred alongside of a service siding, and as soon as a relief engine arrived from Upper Hutt the damaged carriage was shunted in to the siding, and the train proceeded on its way, after the passengers had transferred to other carriages. On arrival at Cross Creek it was found that another draw-bar, on the sixth carriage had snapped, and this carriage likewise had to be dropped from the train.
The second Wellington-bound railcar, carrying a full complement of passengers, had to be pushed up the Rimutaka by a Fell engine.
