ELIMINATION MATCH. WAIRARAPA v. WANGANUI. (By Telegraph—Press Association ) WANGANUI. January 20. Wanganui have 88 runs lead on Wairarapa after the first day's play in the Hawke Cup elimination cricket match which started today on Cook’s Gardens in good conditions. At stumps Wanganui had completed their first innings .with a total of 218 in reply to 130 made by Wairararpa on a dead wicket. The bowlers got more help from the wicket in the afternoon, when Wanganui batted for three hours and a half.

R. Brice, who opened with R. Clarke for Wairarapa, started aggressively, driving with great power. His 44 in about 40 minutes was bright, batting. He was well taken by M. Guy on the boundary. The Wanganui fielding was good and the bowlers kept the runs down.. Wairarapa had five wickets down for 90 after having lost one for 65. N. Hoar hit vigorously for 26. Wairarapa took two hours and a quarter to make their 130. The innings concluded at 2.30 p.m. R. I. Sewell and R." Thomas opened Wanganui’s innings, making 38 before Sewell was well caught by Upston off S. Jenkins, a slow spin bowler who was getting plenty of help front the wind and the improving wicket. Thomas was smartly caught behind the stumps off Poole’s bowling. Wanganui had only four wickets to fall when they were 39 runs behind the Wairarapa total, but.
