The weather was fine and the wicket good for the opening of the third Test match between England and South Africa. Hammond won the toss for the seventh time in succession in Test matches.
Hutton and Gibb opened for England, Edrich having been reduced to No. 7 on the batting list. Gibb was shaky, but Hutton played confidently. Paynter narrowly escaped being stumped when 54. Wade also missed Paynter just before the tea adjournment. after which the batsmen scored very freely, despite the defensive field. Rain eventually stopped play. Scores: — ENGLAND. First Innings. Hutton, lbw, b Gordon 31 Gibb, c Wade, b Davies 38 Paynter, not out 197 Hammond, not out 99 Extras 8 Total for 2 wickets 373 Bowling: Davies, 1 for 81; Langton 0 for 87; Gordon 1 for 98; Mitchell 0 for 45; Dalton 0 for 54.
