WELLINGTON RACES
DEFAULTER WINS CUP. A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The feature of the racing on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at Trentham yesterday was the win of the three-year-old Defaulter in the Wellington Cup. In carrying 8.11 he established a weight-carrying record for one of his age, the previous best having been Renown’s 8.10 at Hutt Park in 1901. Since the race has been run at Trentham Rapine held the honour of having been the only three-year-old to win before Defaulter.
There was a large attedannce for a midweek day and with the favourites doing so well the day’s turnover showed a substantial increase on last year’s opening, which was on a Tuesday. The figures were £57,284 (win £23.224 10s, place £34,059 10s), compared with a total of £46,363, an increase of £lO,921.
The weather was fine, with plenty of sunshine, but a strong westerly wind made matters rather unpleasant, specially for the women. The track was in perfect order. Results: —

Consistent, but Unlucky. Toorak, third in the John Hole and Pareora Handicaps on Saturday, has been placed 16 times since his last win about a year ago. He appeared to be unlucky in the sprint at Washdyke, being allowed to get into a difficult position along the back, and he would almost certainly have won had his run been made sooner. Welcome Addition. W. Cox, an apprentice formerly indentured to D. Lewis at Randwick, has been taken over by F, D. Jones. Cox has had some race riding experience and he will be a welcome addition to the Riccarton ranks which will be further depleted in the autumn. With G. Humphries now retired and C. T. Wilson having been appointed to do the Clifford Estate’s riding which is nearly a full-time job, there will be a further deletion while L. J. Ellis is away in Australia for the autumn campaign.
Reappeared. The former Riccarton-trained gelding Sword-stick, who is now owned and trained by D. P. Wilson at Mosgiel. made his first return for that trainer at Vincent last week when he repeated his first day’s winning form to gain the Lochella Cup, the principal event, on the second day,
The Right Name. The winner of the Novice Handicap at Dunedin, Atwa Rere, has given rise to much comment, principally because of the spelling of his name. Il is correct as spelt above. The reason for the use of the “w” in the first half of the name is not clear, and there is no explanation forthcoming from the owner-breeder. Mr W. L. Milne, of Otikerama, near Gore. When the horse was registered, the name was printed in block letters to ensure, that there was no mistake. If the name had been spelt Atua Rere. it would have been clear, as that means “running first.’’
