DRUNKEN ESCAPADE
FIREMEN SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN. January 19. A sequel to a drunken escapade when two firemen from the steamer Tainui. Leonard Jack Appott, aged 24, and William Westcott, aged 27, converted a motor truck, drove it recklessly and finally plunged it over a 30ft. wall into the Water of Leith, was told in the Magistrate’s Court today, when nie men pleaded guilty. Damage amounting to £9O was done to the truck.
The police stated that the men miraculously escaped injury. They were chased to Port Chalmers in a taxi and located on the vessel.
Accused were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in the Wellington prison, and are to be placed on board the Tainui at that port if she leaves before the expiry of the sentence.
