INTER=HOUSE ACTIVITIES
NEW ASSOCIATION FORMED. ETG DISPLAY IN MARCH. The Wairarapa inter-Ilouse Association as an organisation of wider scope than that which last year conducted an inter-house girls’ drill and games display was officially launched at a representative meeting held in the Toe H Rooms last night. A potentially active organisation providing not only for drill displays but also for general athletic contests among teams representing business houses was formed 'and first details arranged for a monster gala day on Saturday. March 11. when a combined drill and athletics programme will be presented to the public.
Since a preliminary meeting held last Monday, a thorough canvass had been made of the various businesses in the town and generally, opinion was in favo'ur of the wide application of activities, it was reported. As an organisation which would bring about friendly yet competitive relationships among the staffs of business houses, the association's plan was widely approved and from the reports received it seemed that a successful programme would be achieved.
In a general discussion of the association’s plan, the fact that activities should prove self-supporting was emphasised. Actually, it was stated, the expenses of operation would be easily met from gate receipts of a gala day if last year’s display provided any standard of appraisement. It was. consequently, decided that but a nominal levy of 2s (id be made for membership of firms.
One of the major costs last year was that of the uniforms of the competing girls’ teams. While the meeting felt that this was actually a matter for the teams and the firms they represented, the incoming executive was instructed to consider the question of granting a subsidy on such expenses. In order to put the association on a businesslike and sound foundation it was decided that the meeting should elect a president, three vice-presidents, a chairman and six other members of an executive committee together with an honorary treasurer and an honorary' secretary which officers, with the exception of the president and vice-presi-dents, should formulate definite plans for the season’s activities. It was also decided that the executive formulate a definite constitution for the association and that when suitable, steps be taken to incorporate the association under the Incorporated Societies Act. On the motion of Mr W. Dickson it was decided that the association support Keep Fit Week and that a delegate be 'sent to the next meeting hold to consider that question. Should the association accept in full the objects of the Keep Fit campaign and do all possible to ensure the success of Keep Fit Week then it would, in that way alone, be doing a real service to the community.
The meeting unanimously decided that a telegraphed message of' best wishes for success be sent on Saturday morning to Hansell Laboratories' team competing in Napier. Officers were elected as follow: — President, Mr L. B. Maunsell; vicepresidents, Messrs J. H. Cunningham. E. M. Hodder and H. P. Hugo; chairman, Mr G. Daubney; executive, Messrs W. R. Pawson, J. W. Hayden, J. D. Baybutt, G. H. Ruston, J. Bruce and P. Bassett; hon sec, Mr J. Woolf; hon treasurer, Mr A. R. Payne. - The first meeting of the executive was held after the general meeting. It was there agreed, as a general principle, that while individual teams competing in the girls’ drill display must be nominated by a business house, any suitable name could be used and outsiders could be included in the teams. At the time of nomination of these teams, colours would have to be registered and a registration fee of Is per team be paid to the association. Another principle established for this year’s competitions was that the girls' team events be confined to marching and military displays rather than ball games previously included in the programme. The girls’ costumes could include slacks, shorts, or pleated skirts, but must be of a military style. Entries for the girls' display competition would close with the secretary on February 11. Various sub-committees to deal with different aspects of the proposed carnival on March 11 were appointed and the executive will meet regularly to plan all details for the competition.
