CARTERTON

STOCK FOR WAIKATO. ("Times-Age” Special.) On Monday afternoon 370 Southdown rams were sent from the Carterton railway station to Putaruru, Waikato. They were consigned by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, Ltd. and were from the flocks of Messrs W. Howard Booth. R. T. Reid. A. and J. Gray. R. L. Rayner and others. Through the same firm twenty-eight crates of rams for various clients were forwarded to Coromandel in the north and Invercargill in the south. Sheep for Sydney. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy forwarded to a client in Sydney on account of Mr W. Howard Booth 400 Southdown ewes and lambs. The stock was in excellent condition and were shipped by the Wanganella. Next week Mr Booth will forward through the same agency 50 2-th ewes and 2 stud rams. Personal.

Mr Leo Steer, of Dannevirke, was a visitor to Carterton on Wednesday. Mr and Mrs Garrett, of Hamilton, and Mr Trevor Williams are the guests of Mr and Mrs J. C. Harp, Belvedere Road, Carterton. Mr and Mrs C. C. Callender and family are spending six weeks holiday at Paraparaumu. During Mr Callender’s absence from the Bank of New Zealand his place is being , taken by Mr Ross, of Wellington. Mrs W. H. Whyte and her daughter, Jean, have arrived back in Carterton after a pleasant motor holiday spent in Hamilton, Cambridge and New Plymouth. Mr W. Sorensen, of Carterton, who took part in the New Zealand Bowling Tourney at Auckland, has returned home. Leo, son of Mr and Mrs T. Mellish, was admitted to Croyden Hospital late last evening suffering with appendicitis. He will be operated upon today. Beautiful Bulbs.

The "Times-Age” representative accepted an invitation from the Rev W. F. Stent to inspect his beautiful range of gladioli blooms that are growing in the grounds at St Mark’s parsonage. Although the wind has buffeted the blooms, there are still some very beautiful flowers showing and the sight is magnificent. There are some 3000 bulbs growing in various parts of his garden, of which the grower is very proud. Many of the blooms are at present on view, in Carterton. There are a number of blooms in the garden that have been hybridised by Mr Stent, . Swimming Club Sports. The weekly sports of the Carterton Swimming Club were held at the baths last evening, and were fairly well patronised by the public. Several events were decided, and although the conditions were not ideal for swimming very good times were registered. It was announced that early in February the club would hold a carnival, and that probably a visit to Carterton would be made by the lady swimmers who are at present on tour of New Zealand. They are all New Zealand champions and include Miss Isaacs (champion diver), Mona Leydon (swimmer) and Joyce McDonald (backstroke swimmer). The following were the results of last night’s events:— 50 yards junior race.—J. Berry 1, N. Desmond 2. W. Morris 3. Time. 40secs. 50 yards intermediate handicap.—L. Butcher 1, D. Deller 2, O. Desmond 3. Time, 38 l-ssecs. 25 yards junior girls’ handicap — B. Matson 1. V. Merewood 2. M. Wright 3. 25 yards ladies’ handicap.—L. Hopkins and M. Another club carnival will be held next Thursday. Odd Fellows’ Visit. The Wellington District Grand Mistress and her officers will pay an official visit to the Carterton Lodge of Odd Fellows (Manchester Unity) on Monday, February (>. Grass Fire. A grass fire occurred at the Hurunuiorangi Native Pah last evening, several of the buildings were in danger. A strenuous light with the flames eventually saved a big fire. A cigarette butt thrown carelessly in the dry grass is said to have been the cause of the conflagration. Boy Scout Card Party. There was a large attendance at the weekly card tournament in connection with the Boy Scout Movement on Wednesday evening. The ladies prizes were won by Mrs Anderson (1). and Mrs Paterson (2). The prizes in the men’s section went to Messrs A. Knutson and '.jm Hodder. BOWLING. GRADY MEDALS MATCH. Messrs Cascley and Yates, of the Martinborough Club, played a Grady medals match against the holders. Dr Budd and A. Tucker. After a pleasant game the holders were defeated by 22'18. There was a fair number of bowlers watching the game from the bank, and good shots played by either side were applauded. At the conclusion of the game the victors were hea.rtijy congratulated.

CRICKET. CARTERTON v. OLD BOYS. Carterton will be represented as under in a match with Old Boys at Masterton Park tomorrow: —Byers. Ewing, Fitzgerald. Thompson, Harp, Steffert, Kennedy, Ward, Berry, Tretheway, and another.
