TENNIS TOURNEY

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURE PLAY AT MASTERTON CLUB COURTS. RESULTS OF OPENING GAMES. The Nortli Island tennis championships. which are being held in conjunction with the Wairarapa Associations annual championship and handicap tourney, opened today on the Masterton Club’s courts. The fairly goad entries include several wellknown outside players, and indications point to the fixture proving most successful and providing some keen and interesting tennis. The weather was fine and the courts in splendid order for the early games. The fairly strong cross-court wind interfered with play somewhat. Chief interest in the morning centred in the match between Miss Z. Castle, a ranked Wellington player, and Mrs G. McLeod, a Wairarapa representative. Both played consistently good tennis but the Wellington player was too versatile and accurate and won in straight sets. The committee is wisely pushing ahead with the championship games and good progress is being made. After lunch a large gallery watched Painter, the .17 year-old 'Wellington Wilding Shield representative, and one of the. most promising players in the Dominion, in action against yebster, an ex-Greytown youth, who played excellent tennis at the recent Martinborough tournament. Both lads stroked beautifully, keeping a fine length. Webster brought oft some surprising shots, but Painter’s superior experience and courtcraft, coupled with his varied repertoire of strokes, enabled him to clinch the match.

Results up to the time of going to press were as follow: —
