CROSSING SMASH

RAILWAY JIGGER STRIKES LORRY. MAN KILLED AND ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, January 19. One man received injuries from which he later died, another was admitted to Napier Hospital in a serious condition, and four had miraculous escapes when a railway jigger late thi; afternoon crashed into a transport lorry at the intersection of the Wairoa railway and Taradale Road, about half a mile out of Napier.

Killed: Thomas, Richard, aged, railway surfaceman, Napier. Injured: Dwight, P. H„ aged 55, railway surfaceman, Napier. Mr Thomas was in control of the jigger, which was travelling from Westshore to Napier with a “flat-top” trailer attached on which were the other men, all railway employees. The lorry was travelling toward Taradale, driven by Mr Donald Mouat, Takapau, who escaped uninjured. The occupants of the trailer jumped clear when they saw that a' crash was inevitable, and were fortunate to escape with minor cuts and bruises. Mr Thomas received terrible injuries and was rushed to Napier Hospital, where he died shortly afterward. Mr Dwight’s condition is reported to be serious.
