Hunting down and killing gipsies was formerly a legal "sport" on the Continent. Recently Mr L. T. Daniell, of Masterton .met a Sheepowners’ Committee and submitted details of a proposed Patterson scheme, whereby a voluntary contribution of a few pence per freight carcase on export would provide a bounty of several shillings per head for all ewes slaughtered. The scheme would also have the effect of firming the price for replacement ewes, bringing in the hill farmer who provides the ewes for the fat lamb trade to participate in the added benefit for all ewes, whether slaughtered or purchased for replacement. These proposals will be submitted to an open meeting of Wairarapa sheepowners in Masterton on Wednesday. 25th inst.. so that a consensus of opinion may be obtained before submitting the proposals to a wid- , er field of investigation.
