THOROUGHBREDS AT TRENTHAM. SUBSTANTIAL PURCHASE BY AUSTRALIANS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. At the sale of thoroughbreds at Trentham yesterday the top price was 1450 gns paid by the Randwick trainer J. T. Jamieson for the chestnut colt by Tiderace from My Own. A feature of the market was the strong competition by Australian buyers. They took 46 lots out of the 137 lots sold. The total realisation was 33,685gn5, and the average price was just a shade under 246gns. The principal buyer was Mr W. J. Smith, Sydney, who bought 12 lots nine fillies and three colts—for a total of 4035gns. Mr Smith is the owner of the St Aubins Stud. New South Wales, and at the dispersal of the Westmere Stud he purchased the successful sire Beau Pere.
Mr W. R. Kemball, Melbourne, bought 11 lots—seven colts and four fillies—for 2545gn5. Mr C. Wheeler. Adelaide. bought five lots for 3590gns. The Hon A. Croft. Melbourne, also bought five lots for a total of 3005gns—three colts and two fillies. The Elderslie Stud. Oamaru. had a successful day, disposing of six lots for 3360gns—an average of 560gns. The Grange Stud, Wanganui, sold four lots for 2050gns, an average of 5121gns. The Karamu Stud, Hastings, sold six lots at an average of 466gns, and the Koatanui Stud, Kai Iwi, Wanganui, disposed of 14 lots for 2800gns. The sale was conducted by Wright. Stephenson and Co, Ltd, Williams. Inglis and Son Ltd, Sydney and Pyne. Gould Guinness Ltd, Christchurch, in conjunction. Last year the average price for the sale was 257gns, with a total realisation of 32,896gn5. The top price then was 1150gns paid by Mr T. H. Lowry for the Beau Pere—Drama filly Millament. A Siegfried —Lilock colt last year brought 1050gns. It was Mr C. Wheeler. Adelaide, who purchased the Siegfried —lilock colt last year also. A Beau Pere —Barbacan colt last year brought 1000 gns. Featherston: Chestnut colt by Nightly—Morning Quest. J. Cameron, Hamilton, GOgns. On account Messrs A. and J. Gray. Masterton: Chestnut colt by 'Foxlight--Magnitude, W. Hosking, Waiuku, 400 gns. DISTRICT PURCHASES.
A black filly by Foxbridge—Hunting Tower was purchased by H. K. Mclntosh, Masterton,'for 40gns. A brown filly by Tractor—Perimeter was bought by G. Gain, Featherston, for 20gns. and a brown filly by Leighon—Merit was secured by W. Paku. Masterton, for 35 gns.
