CLOUDS OF DUST

CHANGES IN THE ESK VALLEY. OLD BLACK SOIL APPEARING IN PATCHES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, January 17. Yesterday and today Esk Valley settlers continued to endure a very trying time with blinding clouds of silt dust continually sweeping down the valley before the fierce wind, which has raged through the province for the past week. The density of the dust cloud was so great that two cars, travelling during the daytime with lights burning, met in a head-on collision, though fortunately without serious effect. Deep sanddrifts again blocked the road near the Waipawa crossing, in spite of the efforts of a large bulldozer which has been working for two days in an endeavour to keep the road clear. The old black soil swallowed by silt deposits following the floods last April is now appearing 'in the patches, the silt and sand having been scoured away by the wind to a depth of four and five feet. Miles of fencing which after the silting was re-erected at the new valley floor level is now swinging over windscoured gaps or teetering precariously with the last few inches of foothold.
