COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. WORK IN UPPER TAUERU RIDING. The chairman, Mr. R. E. Gordon Lee, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council, held yesterday. Others present were Councillors H. H. Mawley, W. I. Armstrong, P. R. Welch, J. W. Colquhoun, J. Donald and G. Moore. Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., wrote stating that he had been in touch with the Minister of Public Works regarding subsidies for certain public works in the Upper Taueru Riding and also a suggestion that the Minister should visit the district. There was a prospect of Mr Semple visiting Masterton some time this year.
In response to a request from the Minister of Internal Affairs, the council decided to co-operate as far as possible with the “Physical Fitness Week” it is proposed to organise in Masterton.
The District Engineer, Public Works Department, advised that the proposals for metalling 40 chains of the Kaiwhata Road had been approved and tenders could now be called for the work. Monetary authority for £5O, £1 for £l, was being issued and would be recived by the council in due course.
A letter was received from the Eketahuna County Council stating that at its last meeting a resolution had been passed proposing that the boundaries, of the Eketahuna and Masterton counties be altered so as to exclude from the Masterton County and include in the Eketahuna County Mr H. N. Kebbell’s “Nga Paka” property, part of which is now in the Upper Taueru Riding. The Finance Committee’s report was adopted and accounts amounting to £5735 Ils 2d were passed. The ranger reported having dealt with 33 head of cattle during the month, fees amounting to 16s, making the total collected to date £l4 19s.
